Plain Wedding Rings – Platinum, Palladium Or White Gold?

The most important consideration when choosing your wedding ring is what style you want. If you’ve decided that you prefer the elegant simplicity of a plain wedding ring then your next choice is the colour. Yellow or rose gold are simple but if you prefer a white metal then the options become more complicated.
On the surface Platinum, Palladium and White Gold wedding rings all look similar, apart from the price, but which is really the material you want? To help you understand the differences you can’t see, here’s a quick comparison:
Platinum, obviously, is the most expensive of the metals at two to three times the price of white gold. But do you get anything for that other than a rarer metal? Stronger and heavier than white gold, it doesn’t wear easily, however, the high shine finish can be lost easily and your ring will need regular polishing to maintain its shine if you do not prefer a matte finish.
White Gold rings cost between half and a third as much as platinum (for 18ct gold), making them far more avoidable. Although they are commonly plated with rhodium to give extra whiteness to the metal, which can rub off over time, having the plating redone is simple and quick so should not cause too much hassle. The only major drawback of choosing a white gold ring is if you have an allergy to nickel, which is one of the metals commonly used for the alloy. It is also a far lighter metal than platinum.
Palladium is a relative newcomer to the world of wedding rings, only having become popular in the last few years. As such you might not have thought of it before. Varying between a quarter and a third of the price of a platinum ring, a palladium wedding ring is often the most affordable option. As well as having the same hypoallergenic qualities as platinum it is also lighter weight, much like white gold. Its finish does last longer than platinum, but not as long as white gold and the refinishing again takes longer than gold.

Growing Amaryllis Indoors

Nothing can break the gloom, like a bloom in the dead of winter. Of all of the flowering bulbs, the Amaryllis (Hippeastrum) is the easiest to force into bloom. Amaryllis Flower fit into any color scheme with their magnificent blooms of white, pink, red, yellow, and orange. When the showy amaryllis blooms, the explosion is visible from everywhere in a room. Bursting forth from tall stems, these robust plants grow to heights of 2 feet. There are many hybrids of this amaryllis available. They are usually grown indoors in pots because of their rapid growth and showy flowers. If planted indoors, they bloom during the winter and early spring season, depending on when planted. If planted outside in warm climates, they bloom in the spring. Each bulb normally produces two stems of 2 – 6 flowers on each stem. They grow from 12 – 36 inches tall and are hardy outside in zones 8 – 11. The large, (up to six inch blooms) showy flowers, and ease with which they can be grown in the home make the Amaryllis extremely popular as a gift plant during the holiday seasons.
Amaryllis requires no cold storage, as other forced bulbs do, and they need only be planted in a pot, placed in a sunny window, and watered. Although the most expensive of all forcing bulbs, amaryllis also is the largest bulb and produces a lot of bloom for the money. Miniature varieties grow to 1-1/2 to 2 feet and produce the same number of blossoms as their larger siblings. Double-flowered amaryllis is available in several colors. Although many sources sell amaryllis pre-potted, complete with container, soil, and bulb, it’s easy to pot it yourself. Either way, five to eight weeks after planting the bulbs you will be rewarded with stunningly spectacular blooms.
Growing Amaryllis Indoors
Select a flowerpot 6 to 8 inches in diameter with a drain hole. Fill it about 1/3 full of good quality potting soil. Place the bulb in the pot, spreading the roots out gently. Fill the pot up the rest of the way with soil leaving the neck of the bulb exposed. Water thoroughly one time, then water sparingly until the bulb starts to grow. Do not over water. Put the pot in a warm sunny place. You will enjoy watching the flower stalk gradually emerge. Each Amaryllis bulb seems to have its own schedule but generally flowers will be open in 6 to 8 weeks. Each stalk may produce 4 to 6 flowers; large bulbs may have 2 to 3 stalks. After flowering, cut off the flower stalks and watch the leaves appear. Water and fertilize the bulb regularly through the summer. Stop watering in August; put the bulb in a cool dark place in September and let it go dormant for 8 to 12 weeks. Then bring it into the light, water it, and begin the cycle again.
Amaryllis may be purchased as individually packaged or bulk bulbs, but more often are sold in a pre-potted condition. The pre-planted Amaryllis gift boxes normally take no more initial effort than simply watering them with room temperature water to bring them into growth. Avoid getting water on the nose of the bulb. Keep the potting medium moist, but not wet. Don’t over-water! The plant should be kept in a brightly lighted area at about 70-75 degrees F. After the plant begins to grow, feeding is essential. Either use a complete slow- release fertilizer which lasts several months, or a water soluble fertilizer twice a month. Once the plant is flowering, keep it out of direct sunlight, and slightly cooler to promote a longer flower life. After all flowers fade, cut them off at the top of the stalk. When the stalk begins to sag, carefully cut it off just above the bulb nose. Continue to water and fertilize as normal, until the leaves begin to yellow. At this time, cut the leaves back to about 2 inches from the top of the bulb and remove it from the pot. Keep the bulb in a cool (40-50 degree f), dark place for a minimum of 6-8 weeks. Plant bulbs 8 weeks before you would like them to bloom.
Any time after that, you may repot the bulb, and begin the process over again. Bulbs may be planted at two-week intervals, from September through February to ensure non-stop winter bloom, until May. Plant in a well-drained, sterile potting medium, using a standard 6-inch diameter pot. Be sure that the pot has adequate drainage holes. Plant the bulb, with about one-third being above the rim of the pot. Press the soil down firmly to set the bulb securely in place. Water thoroughly, and your plant will begin anew.
Bulbs, which are older than two years, will produce offset bulblets. These bulblets may be left attached to the mother and repotted that way, creating quite a show. Preferably, the bulblets are carefully removed from the mother bulb (immediately before it is replanted), and planted in their own individual pots. These little bulbs will take two years of growth before they will produce their first flower.

Guide to Spicing Up an Old Choker

Been rummaging through your mother old things or through a junk yard sale maybe? If you have came across a vintage choker or one that old but you see some great ideas in your head while you hold it, why not spice it up to your own taste and give yourself an awesome choker?
Check out the old choker and see what it is that you like about it and keep that while you change the rest. If you want, look around a garage sale, second hand shops or craft shops for some ribbons, beads, strings, buttons or whatever else you would like to change or add on. You could also break a few of your old accessories and use their parts.
Mix and match up new beads and jewels for a more modern look, add in some black and silver for something simple and sophisticated or throw in reds for something fun and flirty or just go crazy and mix up colours if you like. You can use the trial and error method to mix and match your beads, accessories and colours and keep the true vintage feel to it if you want. Maybe turn the old pendant into something cool by polishing it and adding a little glitter or something jazzy.
If beads are broken, change them and add more to make it stronger and if the strings are broken, change them. Maybe everything seems to be falling apart and you may have to start all over but you can keep its vintage feel by using same strings and pendant. If you want, you could change the clasp as well if it is broken or old. If you are not too sure on how to do it on your own, just take it to any accessory shop and they will get it done in a few seconds! Easy as that!
So start looking around second hand shops and find stuff for you to personalize your own choker!

Children’s Fashion Jewelry Bracelets and Charms Under Inspection Because of Harmful Cadmium

Last week many newspapers and telecasts reported on the use of cadmium in children’s jewelry. Cadmium is a bluish-white metal that is found naturally in the earth’s crust. Manufacturers started using cadmium in jewelry as a replacement for lead. Lead became known as dangerous because people who had repeated contact with it became seriously ill because of its toxic nature. Cadmium rates high in toxicity according to Bruce Fowler of US Center of Disease Control and Prevention. He said, “Cadmium is a poison and hazardous substance.”
Cadmium is a pliable metal and does not easily corrode. It is cheap and easy to make jewelry with. The jewelry items in suspicion were coming from China. Cadmium was found in jewelry sold at Walmart, Claire’s, and dollar stores. It is not illegal to sell jewelry with cadmium so no law was broken. Walmart said it would pull any children’s jewelry that was questionable. The health concern is that cadmium is a carcinogen (can cause cancer) and can interfere with brain development. Children especially at young ages can suck on jewelry and there is uncertainty about skin contact and what may possibly happen over a period of time.
Hearing all this once again had my ten year old daughter and me going through her fashion jewelry. She did not have many pieces as I happen to make jewelry. She did have about four items including the best friend’s bracelet where the girls each have a bracelet with half a heart on it. She was very good about just throwing it all away once I explained it could be dangerous to her. This was a good reminder for me to stay with my earlier conviction that sticking with gold and sterling silver (.925) is the best way to go when purchasing jewelry as it eliminates any uncertain feelings about the purchase and those precious metals have never had a health concern related to it. I have been in a store and have said no even when it was hard to those pleading faces and the price was right and they even had their own money. I am strengthened and resolved once again in this matter.
As parents we are concerned for our child’s health and well being. We continually learn and look to be informed as we help navigate the best possible course for our children. Another fact worthy of mentioning is Canada Health was inspecting jewelry trinkets from China and discovered a plastic bracelet with dangle charms that said lead free on the package but were actually loaded with lead when tested. This is another indication that we need to be careful and alert our children when age appropriate to these real concerns. Hopefully, my girls have learned from our fashion jewelry discussion and will make wise jewelry purchases in the future. A great guideline to follow for many reasons is to only purchase jewelry that is made with gold or sterling silver.

That is why it’s important that you take care of it as soon as you can. It does not matter how small the repair may be, it would still be best for you to take it to a qualified dealer who specializes in the brand of watch that you own. This should be done even for a simple watch band repair, as professionals are the most reliable in getting the job done.
When you take care of your watch and take it in for watch repair when needed, you are actually prolonging its life span or durability, you may say. This is the key to having a watch for years and years, so every time something may go wrong, even if it’s as minor as taking it in for watch strap repair; do not hesitate to make the wise move. Put in the effort of getting it looked at and having it thoroughly checked by people who know exactly what they are doing so that they don’t make things worse for you.
On the other hand, if you have a watch that you really did not pay much for or you are short on cash, then maybe you should reconsider. But remember that if you really love the said watch or maybe wear it everyday, then go ahead and take it to a watch repair shop which you know does not charge much.
